This is very useful, thanks
I have just taken apart a 4JG2 and the gasket material I found on it is paper or something brittle.

I can now take the part numbers to Isuzu marine to see if they can get me one, touch wood.

I wonder why there are more than one number under 97

So if it is paper, when fitting such a gasket, is it best to coat it with a gasket sealant of some kind?

Greenwolverine. The different numbers under Item 97 are for the different years of production and/or engine type.

eg. the first entry decodes to -
8-94365-688-0 = the part number
c = not sure
9005-9009 = vehicle production dates May 1990 (9005) to September 1990 (9009)
The 01 means that there is 1 required
The B means that it is for a 4JB1

Vunderbar, thanks

Just to confirm -- the page with the key code says 4JB1/4JG2 but there is a B only at the part number
Would both blocks have similar external diameters?

As far as I know the blocks are essentially the same. I assume that the series of different part numbers are for small modifications/suppliers over the years of production. For example they have used both paper and metal gaskets at various times.

Isuzu North America isn't recognizing these numbers. They have no problem getting gaskets for the gear-driven engines but the holes are in the wrong places compared to the gasket for the belt driven G2
Is there a dealership I can contact in NZ?
I buy a lot of my parts from the UK so it's no big deal to pay a bit of postage.

I have tried to do everything right on my engine rebuild so far and don't want to take a chance at what seems to be a crucial sealing area

They were very helpful and I received a genuine Isuzu gasket that fits my front plate

The part number on the Isuzu package is 8-97129429-1
I am typing it again to make sure I do it right: 8-97129429-1

BTW I am thinking of popping the front crank seal into the front plate while it's off the block.

That way I can put pressure downwards in a controlled way
Any objections?

Best to do it when you have it apart, good plan.
