FYI.
Today I was chasing, what I thought was, an oil leak that I had initially assumed was coming from the rocker cover somewhere.
I couldn't see in there very well because of Intercooler etc.
Turns out it was grunge from the intake manifold.
Manifold wasn't loose or anything. Gasket was very brittle while being removed though.
Today has shown me to not be in any hurry to remove your intake manifold. It's quite a time consuming process as quite a few other things need to be removed to get it off. Including the Injector piping.
Oil Leak - Intake Side of Engine.
Re: Oil Leak - Intake Side of Engine.
Looks to me she must have been using alot of oil, no? or way over fueled
Re: Oil Leak - Intake Side of Engine.
I'm not sure about either. I haven't had it very long or done very many kilometres in it.
I bought it cheapish as a second car knowing it needed some work first.
I have ended up doing a lot more to it than initially anticipated.
It seemed to go alright (4JG2-T, manual). I'm used to the 4JB1-T.

Re: Oil Leak - Intake Side of Engine.
I'd say your getting lots of oil into the intake somehow, does it smoke alot, I would think it does, by the amount of oil dripping out the intake, I'd say breather pipe or turbo seals ?? Can't be piston rings or valves, that would cause lots of oil seeping out the exhaust side, something that's not rite is causing all that oil getting in there, my guess would be, its sucking oil out of engine breather. Lets see what the other guys think, I could be wrong.
Re: Oil Leak - Intake Side of Engine.
I have the 4JB1-T 2.8 and had the same sort of problem.
Faild a WOF and was told the fuel pump was leaking. After finally pulling the intake off and checking it, I found that my intake gasket was brittle and letting oil/fuel past it.
Ended up using gasket goo and that fixed the problem.
BTW the intake was bolted up tight before removal too.
Just somthing for you to look into.

Re: Oil Leak - Intake Side of Engine.
I've got a new gasket and will refit the intake manifold after blocking off the EGR valve holes during the next week.
I think I'll also fit a catch bottle to the breather setup and go from there.
I have noticed that there is a definite thin oil film on the inside of most components of the intake system after the turbo. Is this normal? Or is it indicative of turbo seal failure?
From memory my 4JB1-T also had an oily film inside the intake system when I fitted the intercooler years ago. It's done over 300,000ks and doesn't use any oil.

Re: Oil Leak - Intake Side of Engine.
gt the same leak on my 4jg2, has stopped now after putting a oil catch can in, the oil after the turbo and before is just from the breather system i think, mine hade a fair bit in there and was using oil, catch can fixes it.
Re: Oil Leak - Intake Side of Engine.
There will always be some oil in there unless youve had a catch can from new. My 4jb1 has the same oil under the gasket as well but as its never dripped Ive never worried about it. It was there when I bought the car 14 years and 120000km ago
Re: Oil Leak - Intake Side of Engine.
Can anyone show pics of there catch cans and where they are plumbed up too please. I have been thinking of fitting one to my 4jb1-t and need pictures and a explanation so i can do it my self.
