Cape Palliser to White Rock - is it possible

Post by DesmondD »

Hi, I know it's short notice but I have visitors and was planning on going to Cape Palliser tomorrow (Saturday 31 Dec 2016) and just realised a 4WD trek up to White Rock might be a nice off-road drive for them? Is this currently possible? Easy? Are gates locked? Thanks for any advice. Cheers. Des.

Not currently doable. From Palliser you get to a gate that enters Maori land I believe this is locked but if not keep to the formed road and obey any instruction on the gate. If it says dont go then dont. Then you cross onto Doc land just before a big hill climb. Last time I was there the top was horribly scoured out and probably doesnt even exist now. Then just as you get down the other side you reach a locked gate made of railway iron. You can see white rock from here. The landowner that locked this away has since died but access was never restored and chances are sllim.

Has anything changes regarding the denied access, Geeves? I was planning a similar trip to white rock.
