Noisy 4JB1

Post by magicdeo »

Hi all. Lately my 2.8 rodeo has been a bit noisier than usual. Not as loud as a cold start when the CSD kicks in but definately louder than usual. The only thing that has changed lately is that I recently change over to a CAV style fuel filter and water trap, and we have just got cold weather so the mornings have been down around 2 and 3 degrees. The glow plug timer seems to work fine but the engine is noisier even in the day when the temos are around 18 to 20 degrees. The noise doesnt change even when warmed up. Anyone know what could cause this? CSD solenoid? Etc? Cheers

It used to be very noisy on a cold start until the engine warmed up then there was a distinct drop in engine noise as the CSD kicked out. Now the noise gets less but not as quiet as it should. Cheers

if its done around 380,000km the gear driven engine has issues with the injector pump idler gear bearing failing, then it snaps the snout off the block, hard to say if yours is this without hearing it

You have nearly nailed that isuzurob, she has 387 000kms to be exact. I dont know what noise this would make but it doesnt sound like a failed bearing, just sounds normal only a lot noisier, like when it is cold. Which solenoid is the CSD? Could i unplug that and run the engine to see if it makes a difference?

Update on my problem. I read on other forums that when the thermo switch on the thermostat housing is disconnected, the glowplugs should glow for maximum time and the CSD comes on and of course gets louder. When i disconnected mine, the glowplugs did glow but the engine sounded exactly the way it has been lately, making me think the CSD is always activated even though the glow plugs click off. Anyone know what could cause this?

For anyone interested, turns out the back of the pump at the CSD was all blocked up causing the timing to always advance
