At cooler and other thoughts for your comments

Post by tertle »

Ok I've found some limitations to the engine, as well as the Auto trans overheating , one trip over to the west coast over one of the step passes (porter with a trailer) and the AT light came on and when i got to a place to pull over and lift the bonnet you could hear the radiator over flow bubbling!!!

Now, I have a spare Manual trans sitting in the garage and am very seriously contemplating a change, the trans has in the past done some odd things but recently has been playing ball, but changing the trans would eliminate part of that problem?

Im in a quandary as i bought what was claimed to be a good second hand trans with all the bits to do a change over. But the only true way to know if its good is to put it in and test it??? or do i go plan b

as the air con is buggered I'm contemplating removing and putting in a decent sized A/T cooler, I've flushed the radiator but that may well come out next week and will be back flushed as well as putting in a refurbished viscous fan, then getting a snorkel.

whilst I'm not going to be towing again after the porters pass trip i do want to carry a bit of gear when off hunting or going on adventures so i want to future proof the old girl! thoughts????

Trans cooler is always a good idea. In saying that I havnt done mine though but I rarely tow stuff.
You flushed the inside of the radiator but what condition is the outside in? Blocked corroded etc. If you have the radiator out it might be worth rodding as well.
Viscus fan has been a major pain on all my Isuzus. Ive tried messing round with second hand ones but they did not last long. Also every one had a different fam bolt pattern. I have 2 good fans at home and 2 good viscus units I cant use as they dont match a partner. Ive rebuilt 3 fans with new fluid from BNT Its a messy job but not hard.
An overheating engine leaves very little cooling for the trans
To change to manual means crossmember adaptation different driveshafts and a clutch set up.

I have the clutch set up, I'm going to have a chat to my mechanic re the crossmember set up, and your right the fact that the engine is getting warm really doesn't help the trans, in fact they sort of compound the problem by heating the other!!!

need to find a decent trans cooler option, the Viscous fan was rebuilt by a mad as clever isuzu owner in Kapati. Im very seriously thinking of just replacing the radiator as by the time it gets flushed and rodded i may as well replace, esp if i can find one that has a larger capacity?
