I've just replaced the timing belt on a mates Bighorn that broke the belt and damaged a few push rods and broke 1 rocker.
Got it all together, with new parts, and it won't start/run. Blows heaps of white smoke out the exhaust when cranking.
Triple checked all the marks line up OK & double checked the valve clearances.
Got it to start and run for a very short time only. Tons of white smoke out the back. Haven't managed to get it to run again.
Any hints or tips please?

Re: 2.8t 4JB1T problems
I'm hoping it hasn't bent any valves

Re: 2.8t 4JB1T problems
sounds like timing out.
Did you do the belts with the locating bolts in the pulleys?

Re: 2.8t 4JB1T problems
With the original belt being broken I had to turn the pulleys over (all in the correct direction) till they lined up.
And yes, I locked the pulleys in place once at the right positions.

Re: 2.8t 4JB1T problems
1 thing I have noticed in the cam and injector pulleys is small arrows stamped into the pulley edges.
The cam arrow, when locked up in position, points down toward the crank at approx the 4oclock position. The injector pump pullet mark is also at approx the 4oclock position when the lock bolt is in place.
The manual I was using didn't show these marks at all.
Are they supposed to be aligning with anything?

Did you align the mark on the crankshaft timing pulley and the mark on the timing pulley housing?
Re: 2.8t 4JB1T problems
I just looked at some pictures of when I had an engine out to do some repairs. Those small marks are in the same positions as you mention.....
Re: 2.8t 4JB1T problems
I have found a diagram for the timing marks from AutoData and it shows the lock bolts in the cam and IP pulleys in the 4 O'clock position.
Don't know if this is correct or not, but the Isuzu manual shows them in the 2 o'clock position and I'm more inclined to believe the manufacturer over aftermarket
info.
