Tie rod length and steering wheel

Post by Buck96 »

Hey all,

My steering wheel is a bit off center(to the right) when driving straight on the road and its annoying as all heck so I wanna do something about it.

I've done a bit of research and from what I understand i have to adjust the left rod in and the right rod out which I'll be doing in increments and then getting a wheel alignment done once the steering wheel is straight again.

While I was looking at the threads I noticed there was a bit of a difference between the left and right rod ends which is where i guess the off center steering wheel has come from

L inner - 9
L outer - 8
R inner - 10
R outer - 7

I had a sus in the workshop manual and it only says to put a mark where the existing rod ends are when you're replacing them. However I find that it's not exactly helpful in this instance.

My question is, is there a standard amount of threads there should be between the rod ends or can i just even both sides and then adjust the rods accordingly to straighten the wheel?

I'd rather avoid bump steer if I can. Cheere

I would expect the threads at each end of each tie rod to be about the same but its only the total length that matters. That needs to be adjusted on a wheel alignment machine. There are diy methods that work for toe in toe out but these are to get you to the shop. Ive bent a steering bracket in the bush and used a long straight edge to set toe to get me home. Generally the wheel alignment place will set the steering wheel straight especially if you ask for it Make sure they are willing to adjust camber and castor with shims as well. Some will tell you its not adjustable and some will ask for more money. In both casers there are other wheel alignment places you can go to

I'll just get the shop to sort it out, had 4 alignments from bib Jane and they never bothered to straighten the steering wheel however I never asked either.

I'll give them a call and ask them about it, see how I go. Cheers again Geeves
