Outer CV Joint replacement

I have a 1996 Bighorn and am trying to replace the outer cv joint. I’ve tried hitting the joint off with a hammer but it doesn’t seem to budge. Is there a clip or something I’m missing or any other method to removing the joint?

In theory there is a circlip inside the joint. The book says cut most of the way through the joint and crack the remainder with a cold chisel. It is possible to smash the joint off but it takes determination and a bad mood.
