I am about to collect an 89 model 4ze1 engine Jackaroo as a parts car.
I does not run , and I need to load it onto a trailer.
My problem is that the present owner has lost the ignition key, and the steering is not straight ahead, making it difficult to run up the ramps onto the car trailer.
What is the best way to open or overcome the steering lock please?
Steering locked
Re: Steering locked
Remove the housing and undo the ignition assembly. Not sure if it uses security or break off bolts. Its a parts car so take your battery grinder

Re: Steering locked
I have the plastic dash parts below the steering column removed. The Haynes manual says to use a hammer and chisel to put a groove in the break off bolts, but the bolts are angled upward at nearly 45 degrees, so no way of getting a hammer up in there. I am scratching my head for the moment, as I prefer not to destroy anything if it can be avoided. The steering lock is mounted by a thing resembling a small engine conrod, with the "big end" clamped around the steering column. I am thinking that I might have to cut through that "con rod". I imagine that if I do that cut, I could weld it back together later, if needed, and my only loss would be the steering lock feature. Any thoughts on that?
