2.8TD Automatic performance

Post by mrstrat »

Hi everyone,

I have a UBS69 which I have put a mildly modified 4JB1T into. Behind the manual the performance over the stock 3.1 is excellent, as is the fuel economy.
I would like to upgrade to another car that is an auto 4x4 as I’m getting lazy in my old age, but I like the jack too much.
Therefore, I am considering converting the car to an auto but keeping the 2.8.

Can someone tell me how the 2.8 goes with an auto behind it, both towing and not towing, and what fuel economy I would expect.

Thanks heaps!

Hi I've had an 2.8 auto Mu and went through 3 transmissions, I reckon they are faster than a manual if they are running perfect. I didn't do much heavy towing. My only complaint with those 2.8 auto's is they are old and not very reliable now. Just the gasket kit is around $1000.

3.1 auto is more modern tech, i'd go with a good one of those if your going that track and there's probably more of them around.

Thanks for your reply.
I thought the transmission was meant to be a good aisin one. Did the 2.8 have an electronic injector pump with a TPS for the transmission? A computer for the transmission?

No computer and was manual pump. They are good if they are in perfect working condition.
