Advice on seeking a replacement 4JG2 New Zealand

Post by DoubleA »

Hi - Looking for a replacement 4JG2 for my 95 MU manual. I sourced the last one from 'Blairs' in Christchurch, and it was an excellent runner (up until last weekend when a hose split and the engine overcooked - aaaarrrrrgghhhh buggerbugger).

Does anyone have any advice on reputable stockists of 4JG2s, or any advice on what I need to specify in obtaining one?

Also, my MU is a really tidy example with snorkel, and I've been the only NZ owner since I brought it ten years ago with 83K on the clock (still under 200K and never missed a service, well, the engine is now buggered afterall) - any idea on what it would go for $ with a dead engine.

low milage for a dead engine Both of mine are at 225k and going well
Cheapest way to get a good engine is to watch trademe for bighorns wizards and mus with this engine and a few other spare parts in a tidy little package. My Wizard will be going on sale in a couple of months and start price will be around 3k. A damaged truck will be a lot less but you can still test and see if its good

Cheers Geeves. Yes, managed to get it to my regular mechanic in Queenstown, but still no definitive call if its a write off, or a new head is required. All the more annoying is that two years ago a fault in my new turbo caused a runaway that destroyed the original engine with only 150K ish on the clock. $5200 later new engine and a great runner . . . . This. Aaah well, when little bits of rubber fail, the consequences are disproportionate.

Dont you hate split hoses. The books all say hoses should always be replaced every 6 years. Most of mine are 20. I lost a head on a cortina to a split hose.
Did the motor stop or just get hot? If it siezed throw it away

It seized. The mechanic has been lookin for a replacement engine, but there isnt much out there thats either reasoble nick, or not really expensive. A full rebuild is looking like 5K, but rockers are proving tricky to source, and exorbitant from Japan. At least with a rebuild from a trusted mechanic I will know what im getting as an end result, and should give me many more years. I will replace all the hoses!!

Hear ya Mr Geeves. Just dont fancy the logistics of the wait, then getting it to queenstown. Ive already missed a month and a half of fishing, camping, hunting and exploring adventures in paradise. I won't be spending the $ on a season pass, so no snowboarding either. Being without my trusty mu is wearing thin, sooner im mobile again the better, looking out the window at the taunting hills is making me growly bear.
Unless someone knows if a good 4jg2 that can be shipped within a week?

3500 will buy a good 4jg2 with 18 month old head and turbo injector pump rebuilt less than a year ago 225k on the clock Oil never needs topping up between changes It comes with a auto trans a pair of diffs (rear lsd) mag wheels with less than half worn AT tyres and a 5 door body which is reg and wof.
Take the motor wreck the truck and half that money will come back or you could just upgrade to the wizard and wreck the Mu
Only catch is you have to come to Wellington to collect it.
