Hi All about a year ago i bought a 4JB1 turbo TF rodeo and after reading many posts on this site went down the road of 2.5" exhaust with custom dump. Wound up boost to 15psi, Fitted EGT gauge and put sensor just before turbo on manifold. My question is after i installed the EGT gauge i took it for a test drive up a long steep hill near my house and it got up to 700C. I then twisted the boost compensator 90 degrees and wound in the max fuel screw about half a turn and got the same 700C up the hill. No excessive black smoke or anything. Redline on gauge is 900C. Has anybody else had similar results with $50 Ebay gauge? and if so has any damage been caused? Thanks.
It only got to that temp near the top of the hill loaded up in 4th, By the way the rodeo goes heaps better than before.
CHEAP EBAY EGT GAUGE
Re: CHEAP EBAY EGT GAUGE
A lot of those gauges are faranhight not Celsius. 700 is very hot 900 would see metal parts dripping out under your truck
Re: CHEAP EBAY EGT GAUGE
I have the 3.1 4JG2 Jackaroo, recently fitted EGT with hill climb 600* most I've seen, only running 12 psi boost also have 2.5" zoost .
But the 4JG2 is intercooled.
I have found if trying to running a hill in 5th gear EGT 50* hotter than changing down into 4th, reving a little harder but engine doing less work.
PS only using cheap ebay gauges

My $50. Ebay gauge works well, 700*C is considered to be the upper limit if reliability and engine longevity are expected.
Re: CHEAP EBAY EGT GAUGE
not uncommon to see those temps when using an EGT in the manifold (most of us use the EGR block off plate). To get the readings that most people refer to 350 - 400 range the EGT probe should be placed 2.5 inches from the back of the turbo.
Re: CHEAP EBAY EGT GAUGE
my 4jb1-t runs 750 degrees all day everyday tows big loads and done over 40,000km engine still like the day i modified it, as above, most tuning shops run egt gauge in the dump pipe so if the probe breaks it doesnt go though the turbo and run them at 450-600 degrees
Re: CHEAP EBAY EGT GAUGE
Yeah thanks for all the feedback guys. I thought it would be ok as i didn't touch the injection pump until after first driving it with egt gauge in and then once i fiddled with pump got same temps. When cruising with no load at 100kmh(probs 108 as running 31" tyres) in 5th it seems to want to sit around 400deg.
On an unrelated topic has anyone had any experience with Kumho KL71 muddys? i can get some cheap on the net and they look pretty sweet.

Re: CHEAP EBAY EGT GAUGE
mixed opinions. Some think they are great some not. Me I would shy away from any directional tyre as you cant rotate them which is very important if you want good life out of mud tyres
