Yer thanks, I'm just reading here about testing them, I'm just familiar with diesel engines at all.

Yeah it really doesn't take much to test them. Way better than the $110 bucks for the replacement set.

How often should they be replaced by schedule? My truck has done 106,000 kms now.
I have also noticed that it take a few too many turns to get it started now, Again I know nothing about diesels but my warn out old Pajero used to fire up with one revaluation.
If the problem is the glow plugs that would explain the slow start, smoke while cold and the fact that at temp there is not issue at all.

3 oil pumps in that engine
One of them provides 300psi pressure to the injector rail. Engine cant fire till it has this pressure.

holden say 20 turns of the crank or less is fine for them to start when cold, there are many things that cause long cranking, but yours sounds like glow plugs, and they are the easiest to start with

yes I got the same problem with my 3.0 litre, 4JX1 engine. I live up in the Waikato so Im not sure about it being a temperature problem. Mine has been blowing smoke and idling rough on start up for about a year now, getting to the point were i need to dump it as i cant drive it although when it is warmed up it goes fine. Went through the oil change process, ignitors checked, compressions checked, spent $3,500 changing the injectors, wiring harness, oil rail pressure sensor (all common faults with this engine) still no good.
Took it for another scan this morning and got charged another 60 dollars to be told theres no fault code. I dont believe them anymore has anybody in New Zealand got a proper tech 2 to read these engines? I can read the flash code and it idicates a fault number 16 which if im correct is the oil temperature sensor, how come the diagnostic doesnt pick it up ? Is it worth me changing it because im at the stage were i cant afford to put more money into it on a gamble, anybody out there got any ideas
cheers mark

i can read them with tech 2, try testing the glow plugs, very common fault when cold starting, if it only plays up when cold, also has yours got the fuel filter down on chassis rail on a angle? they cause long cranking when cold
