Hi everyone, my hubby purchased a 1995 Isuzu Mu a few days ago, over the weekend we thought we'd try 4WD out. Put it into 4wd and it makes a noise that sounds alot like a stone stuck in the brake caliper from the drivers side front wheel. Put it back into 2wd and it goes away. Anyone have any ideas please? New to this 4wd business so just want to get it sorted.

sounds like the freewheel hub. Does this have auto or manual hubs

Right first question
Are all the tyres the same size?
When you put it in 4wd was it on a soft or hard surface?
Part time 4wd is not designed for hard surfaces. If your tyres are all the same size then engaging 4wd will not cause problems in a straight line but if your tyres are mismatched or if you are cornering it puts a lot of stress on things.
First test
start engine engage 4wd drive forwards about 5 meters untill you hear a loud clunk. Stop the engine put back in 2wd neutral. This should lock the hubs in but but the rest of the drive train in 2wd. Get under the front of the car and try and turn both axles in a forward direction. One will be locked the other probably isnt. This is the freewheel to repair. If both are locked try and turn the driveshaft although this would indicate a diff issue
