More often the opposite is true. The after market sets are often chrome rings and steel sleeves but the genuine is chrome sleeves and steel rings
You cant hone chrome

What happens with age is that the casting of the block can change slightly and this can cause the liners to be slightly off true. Honeing steel liners will correct this but you cant hone chrome. They do settle but it can take a long time. There have been many isuzu engines that have more crankcase fuming after rebuilds than they should. If it happens there is no real fix and the best advise is to fit a catch can. These rebuilt engines still have good compression and will still run 3 to 400000km or more. If your current engine was looked after all its life it has likely done at least this far We have evidence of a million km on a 4jb1t but it was in a npr truck

ThIs motor was damage when I got it and I'm pulling it part it looks like the injector's were leaking and it caused damage to the piston and sleeve , I suggest hone the motor after installing after market Parts the Machine shop guy went a little quite after that , they seems to have issue with these motors and felt it was best not to go with After Market rings and sleeve I also have a neighbor who was not keen on after markets parts as well , But you saying you had good success with after market parts once you hone the sleeve

First I have never rebuilt a diesel engine. Last engine I rebuilt was a Hillman Avenger probably 30 years ago
Most of my post comes from other info in this forum.
Whith steel lineres you are meant to hone them after fitting which gives a good surface for the rings to bed in but also takes care of minor imperfections in the bore. They have been used successfully many times here. The only catch is that most come from China and some are very good steel some might not be I dont know a way to tell them apart. I always considered the life of steel liners to be lower but Nissan diesels are steel liners and do the same 400km plus our isuzu engines do
Crome liners are factory but can be found aftermarket as well these are fully finished when you fit them Inperfections in the bore due to heat stress in normal use can affect the roundness at certain points. e are talking 1 or 2 microns at most so less than you would have on a conventional rebored engine. The higher compression though causes a higher portion of blow by if this happens.
In either case the rings and bores must be opposite materials Its not uncommon for a Isuzu diesel to have some crankcase fumes and a catch can is the best fix
