Engine cutting out. Urgent problem!!!!!!

Hi Team,

My 3.1 diesel Mu (1998 model ) has developed a dangerous issue since have the fuel filter changed which could leave me dead in the water right in front of a descending Kenworth!!!!!! and I was wondering if anyone could help me track down the cause???? PLEASE.

Here's the scenario: 1. This only happens on hard left hand turns, so far only in an urban situation i.e. turning hard left in second gear accelerating into another street. The engine will either cut out completely or I will only have an idling engine- no accelerator. UNTIL: the turbo timer goes down to zero & then I can re start the engine & it runs like a dream.

2. I'm a bit reluctant to try it out on the open road amongst other traffic at 100k+ but I have replicated it 3 times this morning on the same three street turns.
As I said, sometimes the engine cuts out completely & other times I lose the accelerator but the engine idles. EVERYTIME when the turbo timer gets back to zero the engine will restart perfectly and away we go until the next hard left turn in a lower gear.

Before I get traveling a couple of thousand km over the xmas break, can anyone throw some light onto a possible cause of this problem before I get squished by a road train?????

Really would appreciate some help with this one, it has me and my mechanic snookered!!!!!

have you tried disabling the turbo timer? Or setting it to 0
The fact that it returns to normal when the timer expires may be a clue

Thanks Geeves.

What is the easiest way of disabling the timer?????
Nothing too technical.

Geeves,

It is a bit strange that this fault only occurred AFTER I had the new fuel filter fitted. Could this have had any bearing on the problem????

turbo timers are not factory fitting Who knows how it might of been wired without looking. Most turbo timers have an off function either by setting to zero or an off switch.
Its possibly a wire has been dislodged or damaged in the region of the filter. The fact that it only occurs going round a tight corner suggests this

Thanks very much. I'll check that out & I'll probably disconnect the timer anyway.

Appreciated your help once again.

Seasons greetings.

Jeeves & other diesel experts,

Since receiving your advice Jeeves I have had the turbo timer turned off to eliminate any possibility that by some coincidence it was that which was causing the problem???

This morning in a suburban 50k street I changed down to second gear to turn into a side street, gave the engine a boot on the loud pedal as I came around the corner & the engine cut to idle & the accelerator pedal would not function,I just sat there idling away sweetly!!!
I turned the engine off & immediately restarted it & everything was back to normal!!!!!! There is something going on here & it has got me snookered.

Any advice on where to look next would be appreciated before a Kenworth gets me!!!!!

98 is the efi 4jg2 engine, try clening the big electrical plug to the injector pump, if that doesnt work the control sleeve inside the injector pump will be worn and the injector pump needs rebuilding (it is a common problem)

Thanks Rob. Any idea why it only does this on hard low speed lefthand turns???? No problems with similar righthand turns.
Could it be tied into the replacement fuel filter that was fitted immediately prior to this fault appearing???? The mechanic fitted a non return valve below the filter after I contacted him about this problem.
Could it be the wrong filter?????

could be wrong filter but that should cause lack of power most of the time under long acceleration, the injector pump plug in just behind the fuel filter from memory, its a big plug
