4jj1 is as close as I have. As far as I know only the head and injection are different. (and probably pistons)

Hi there, I am new to the site, and am in the process of buying a mates wizard (diesel). If there is a service manual for that, it would be great. Need to sort a problem with 4wheel drive light coming on (but it's not engaged in 4wheel drive) under acceleration and what sounds like gears trying to engage in the front diff......
Cheers

Get the first 3 in the list. The Frontera covers everything excepth the diesel motor and trans. Bighorn to cover that and of course the owners manual.
What year wizard?
If its the 4wd by stick rather than button a quick fix to get it going again would be to take the small cover off the left hand side of the diff locate the vacume line and connect it directly to the big diaphram. On one side the 4wd light will stay on. Connect it to the other side and the light will go off and stay off. This forces the front diff into 2wd mode so you wont be able to use off road until fixing properly but it will stop the grinding noises. To identify the vacum lead it should come from a canister about half way back down the left chassis rail Check you have vacum here or the above will not work.
From here to a proper fix is one step at a time. The 2 solenoids might be faulty or the switch in the gearbox could be faulty. Mine had the same problem when I got it and I ended up wiring the solenoids to a switch so I can select the diff independent of the 4wd switch. It was meant to be a test only but then I remembered how often it is useful it be able to select low range but 2wd in my other wagon so never looked further. The switch is still blue tacked to the dashboard 3 years later.

Ok, cheers for the info on the quick fix for the 4wheel drive light. The wizard is a 96 model.

Dont I wish
The 4jh1 engine is here and the frontera is probably more than 50% right but who knows. Has the factory even issued a manual to its dealers yet? If they have we have to wait for someone to steal it and put it on line
