93 Isuzu Bighorn makes big graunching noise in front diff

Hey guys trying to figure out whats going on with my bighorn. Ive been driving it for about 6 months and its been fine, the other night i was on road doing 100klm/h and there was this horrible grinding noise came from the front diff ( more the L/H side i think) then i lost drive and it would rev or anything. So i pulled over turned it off and back on again and i had drive.So i nursed it home another 20 mins doing about 80klm/h and i never heard that noise again. I would really like to know if someone has had this problem or similar to point me in the right direction.It has auto locking hubs if that helps Ive got it parked in my shed and will leave it in there until i get to the bottom of it, cheers.

First question Was it in 2wd or 4wd? If in 2wd and has auto hubs nothing should be happening in the front diff. 4wd is not for hard surfaces like sealed roads.
