Definatly sounds like an air leak. You can dismantle the pump and clean it. Mine stopped working because of a small flake of goo under the inner flap Otherwise the 3 orings in the filter are the only seals. Also look at your rubber hoses for splits at the ends.
Other common fault in older pumps is the front seal on the pump. This can be replaced without removing the pump but the pulleys do have to come off. There was a suggestion that a temp fix is a electric pump in the line to stop it sucking air but Lewis did this and a couple of months later it dumped a tank of fuel through that seal so I dont recommend it any more
