If the vehicle has a sensor on the power steering system then that's another thing to look into.

Thanks guys, appreciated.

I have just come back from a 300k trip & the problem has reappeared while driving at speed.

I have disconnected the turbo timer so I can turn the engine on & off at the key ( just as well I did!!)

I can be traveling along at 100+k & all of a sudden I lose revs, "check engine" light comes on. I have enough momentum to maintain a good speed & if I turn the key off & back on the engine will restart or regain revs & away we go until next time!! Note: sometimes the rev counter drops back to idle ( but accelerator won't work) & other times the revs drop to zero & turning the key off & on returns to engine to full noise.

This problem is weird!!!! & has only happened as I said since I had the alternator belt & brackets & the fuel filter replaced.

Hopefully this new lot of symptoms will bring on a wee light in someones head. It's got to be something tied in with the above work. So far all the kenworths have missed!!!!!

Cheers guys, any wee gem of a thought may help track this problem down. I'll definitely check the suggestions offered so far if a simple solution doesn't turn up.

PROSPEROUS 2016 TO EVERYONE ON THE FORUM.

It sounds like some sort of sensor or loose wire that causes the engine management to go into some sort of limp mode with intermittent or confusing inputs. I'd be checking out any wiring that could have been bumped while doing the belts and any wiring/plugs around the injector pump and thermostat housing.
Does the speedo still function correctly when it plays up?
Does a 98 3.1 have a crank sensor?
Also check that the main earth strap from the battery to the alternator bracket/engine is connected properly.
I don't think that it has anything to do with the fuel filter replacement.

Thanks very much to everyone for your helpful comments. I'll get my auto/electr to run his eye over all those areas & hopefully we can cure the old girl.
