4JB1T Blowing sump gaskets after rebuild. ...?

Post by fourbienewbie »

Hi All,
just recently bought a 96 rodeo running the 4JB1T, got it from my father in law after he rebuilt it.
On the way home (500km trip) it started spewing oil everywhere. I limped it home, ripped the motor back out and re-did the sump gasket, which fixed it for maybe 20 minutes, then started running out again. Not sure where I am going wrong, but I have very limited funds and am running out of ideas... any suggestions?

Where on the sump is it leaking?
Is it the sump?
Ive had 2 leaks in the past at the bottom of the engine not caused by the sump.
First was a leaky seal on a oil filter (When you have the filter on and off 3 times to get at the cooler pipes they dont seal so good)
Second was a crack in the dipstick tube. What a mission getting the broken stump of the old tube out.

It is coming from drivers side back of the block, got heaps of blowby, but still getting pressure release from the pcv. Have been scratching my head for 2 weeks, and still havent come any closer to solving it. Not looking forward to pulling the motor back out again (due to lack of decent tools this is unavoidable) and re doing the gasket. But I have to suck it up I guess and get on with it haha. Just cant think of why the sump would be pressurizing so much, driving me mad :$

I am 90 percent sure it is the sump, but I will try changing the oil filter and tightening the housing (if that is what it is called) and see what happens :) thanks guys

When you redo the gasket glue both sides and give it a decent time for the glue to dry. Generally I would say dont ever glue gaskets unless the manufacturer says you should but this seems a special case.
Also check the mating surfaces are clean and flat. When I had my auto serviced my regular mechanic gave it to his aprentise who is better at getting sumps off

The thing is that the sump gasket on my motor has a front rubber and rear rubber, and the rebuild kit I got said to use a silicone gasket for the sides. I was thinking about making a cardboard gasket to throw in as well, but I cant see it helping

there are silicon sealers and silicon sealers. First none will work well unless you clean it like a religious fanatic (sorry to all religious fanatics that are members) Second someone else will advise a recomended brand but definitely a high temperature neutral cure for automotive use specification.

Ok, so after finding out that I would be quite good as a contortionist (my big word for the day) I have found that the oil is not leaking from the sump gasket.. WOOHOO!!! But it is leaking probably about 3 inches above where the sump and block meet.... so now to check the rear main and plan from there. Thanks guys!!!
